Blog Journal #9

The phrase "flipping the classroom" is where students gain knowledge through new material outside of class. This material can be reading, lecture videos, etc. In the classroom, students reinforce harder material. This approach is nothing new in education. I used in when I was in elementary school. We used geographic jigsaw and videos through Pearson to learn material outside of class. This a great educational approach that allows students to learn more about topics that are addressed in class on their own time.

An open education resource is an educational resource that is available for anyone to use. This is different from the exclusive group that we are in on Diigo in that it is only available to members of our class. Examples of open educational resources are Kahn Academy, Mathnation, etc. At the bottom of this blog I have included a link to an article that includes more examples. This particular article shares a few important links that help prepare elementary school students for the common core requirements.

I have to say that I really enjoyed both PowerPoint projects. To say that I didn't struggle with them would be a bold lie. I found that the most difficult part of the project was making sure that the buttons were working, and that the arrows on the keyboard could not be used in order to navigate through the presentation. One thing that I did enjoy doing was making an interactive quiz. I composed what one might compare to a "great value" jeopardy game that allowed for students to test their knowledge on renewable energy. I thought I would try something different than English, as I have stuck with that subject for the majority of the semester.

I learned how to display the correct answer behind the links, so that my students would know if they were correct or not. This is something that took quite awhile for me to learn, but it will be useful in my future endeavors. I would say that I struggled  more severely with the second powerpoint project than I did with the first one. Overall, I thought both projects were very rewarding, and I have no complaints.

If I were to do anything different, I would have tried to look into this assignment long before it was assigned. I found several video tutorials online that were useful in helping me understand what exactly hypermedia is, and how it can be used effectively in PowerPoint. I still firmly believe that I am one of the most technologically inept people in the world, but I have gotten better with time.

If we had more time during the semester, I am sure that I would be capable of mastering all the skills. While both Powerpoint assignments were hard, I can say that I enjoyed them far more than any other assignment in this class. Every assignment that we have completed allows for us to be better prepared for the workplace. However, Powerpoint is an essential tool for any job. Below, I have attached screenshots of both Powerpoint assignments.
