Blog Journal #7
My experience with twitter has been very rewarding. I already had an ample amount of experience with the social media site before class, so it has been a smooth transition. I haven't really learned that much in using twitter. However, I should note that using twitter for education is much different than using it recreationally.
I have really enjoyed communicating with my classmates, that is probably the biggest benefit when it comes to using twitter. Twitter is also a great instrument to use for reading articles, and keeping up to date with what is going on with the EME twitter account. In addition, I have found reading about the influence of technology in education to be rather intriguing. Reading about the development of augmented reality in education has been one of the many highlights. Furthermore, it is nice that we can use something that many of us are familiar with as part of classroom participation. I cannot say that I have had any difficulties with twitter.
The web design assignment is arguably the most beneficial assignment that we have had in this class as of now. I had no prior experience with web design, and I am rather proud of my web page. I learned how to embed a calendar, how to put links on my webpage, and I learned how to use moving graphics. I firmly believe that this is a skill that I will use frequently in my career.
There was not anything that I didn't like about this assignment. Again, should I decide to become a teacher, it is a huge asset to have web design experience. I liked everything about the assignment, and it was fulfilling to see all of my hard work come to fruition. I think in any career, you will need experience with web design, especially as the use of technology continues to grow.
Even if I go on to be a lawyer, my law firm will need a website. If I were to do anything differently, I would have started the assignment long before it was assigned. The only way to improve a website is to put more time and energy into it. At the bottom of the page is a screenshot of my website, along with a link.
As for my thoughts on the use of adaptive technology, I really enjoyed reading about it. One thing that stuck out to me in particular was the use of augmentative alternative communication devices for students who struggle with communication disorders. There is software in computers that synthesizes speech from text. I do have prior experience with this software as it is used with most apple products. However, I was surprised to see that this type of technology has been used in the classroom.
Moreover, I also found reading guides to be an interesting resource. It consists of a plastic strip that highlights a specific part of the text so that those who struggle with visual tracking can focus on a specific part of the text. This resonated with me because I had trouble reading in my youth, so much so that I had to get a reading tutor. Ironically enough, I am now an English major.
I think the biggest difficulty for teachers when using this software, is helping the kids understand that they are no different than any other student. I struggled with having confidence when I had to leave the room to go read with a tutor. I couldn't tell my friends that I had an IEP because I was embarrassed about it, and I still am to this day. There are a few struggles when it comes to the use of adaptive technology. I think it is essential that our teachers support their students when they feel discouraged because of their impairment. In addition, a lack of public funding in schools could be a significant problem for teachers and students who need to obtain this type of technology.
Other adaptive technology resources that I found interesting were audio recorders. I actually have an audio pen that I got from the student disability resource center to record lectures. This is especially helpful as sometimes I struggle with note taking due to anxiety. I frequently over analyze things, as I am meticulous about everything that I do.
I can also see this resource to be beneficial for those that are hard of hearing, or those who have impaired vision. I really enjoyed reading about the different adaptive technologies, and I think they are instrumental in helping students who have disabilities. I have my own issues with severe anxiety disorder, and it is nice to see that so many different resources are available for students who have different disabilities and disorders. I look forward to reading more about this, should I decide to teach.
