Blog Journal #6

I visited Leon High School's  webpage. In that process, I looked at Mr. Brian Poche's blog. Mr. Poche is a 10th grade geometry teacher at Leon. On the page, several things are posted with the ability to be shared publicly. Parents may use this blog in order to keep up with things that are happening in the geometry course. There is an online calendar on the top left side of the page, links to Parent Portal (the school's grade center,) and links to free resources are also included.

The free links consist of free graph paper, an online textbook, and the online math resource, mathnation. Mathnation provides the students with extra practice through an online workbook. This also shows how technology can be implemented in the classroom. The majority of the resources that the students will use in the class are accessible through the platform of Mr. Poche's blog. Screenshots of the blog,  Leon's webpage, and links to the webpage are at the bottom of this blog post.

I envision myself using technology to be more efficient in my career in several ways. I would probably use a lot of mobile apps.  I would more than likely use the google docs app, the Microsoft Outlook app for email, and the Crew app which I already use to communicate with co-workers today. I would also try to make newsletters through Microsoft Word, now that I have learned that skill. I think sending out a monthly newsletter discussing events going on in the office would be beneficial in the workplace. I also believe the applications that I listed will help me in staying on top of my work and business meetings.

I thoroughly enjoyed the SandBox that we checked out during class earlier this week. I had no idea that we had the kind of advanced technology that we got to hands-on experience with on Monday. If I had to pick out the most resourceful type of technology for classroom use, it would be the Smart Board. I knew ahead of time that the Smart Board is a great asset to the classroom. I did not know of the progress that the board has made since I last used it in high school.

For example, we were able to look at some objects in 3D. If I were able to look at the inside of a volcano in my environmental science class, I would have enjoyed it more, and I probably would have been able to pass that AP exam. I think that the 3D capability of the Smart Board  keeps students engaged and involved in their learning process, this is why it is so useful. I also found several other forms of technology to be beneficial.

As I am passionate about music and the arts, I thought that the Clear Touch Interactive tool was both intriguing and an essential part of the educational experience in the classroom. It allows for musicians to play around with instruments. It would more than likely be used in elementary education. I could definitely seen it being used in special area. Usually in elementary school they have music a  special area for music. Furthermore, the tool has other interactive games for students to play in the classroom. Again, keeping younger students engaged in the classroom is crucial. I think this tool would provide such a platform. Truthfully, all of the tools in the SandBox are useful because they keep students interested in the material. As technology provides interesting learning styles, technology also tends to cause students to lose their attention span.

I also liked the 3D printing machine. I am unsure how 3D printing would be beneficial in education, as I do not know much about it. However, I have read a few articles on twitter discussing its importance in the future. I was fortunate enough to 3D print a shark figure. I have heard stories of people being able to 3D print organs and other important things. I think 3D printing is interesting, and I think it is a skill that will be utilized in the future. Allowing kids to get experience with the machine could change the world that we live in. Plus, what is cooler than bring able to 3D print a brain? I just don't believe that they are used enough in education. It's like buying a car just for show, but you keep it parked in the garage.

I should conclude in saying that I thought that visiting the SandBox was one of the best educational experiences that I have had as an undergraduate. I talked with the "tour guides'" and I will definitely be back to utilize some of the tools. At Florida State, we all pay a technology fee, I understand why now. The tools in the SandBox are expensive, I am grateful that we have the opportunity to become familiar with this advanced technology at FSU. As I said before, below are the links/screenshots to Mr. Poche's blog, as well as photos from the SandBox.
